Hi everyone. I’d like to announce the pre-release version of [Contenir Mail](https://github.com/contenir/contenir-mail) for anyone interested.

As Laminas Mail was abandoned, and I actually liked using it, I set about updating it. It keeps the full Git history back to Zend Framework, so every original contributor’s authorship is preserved, and it’s modernised for PHP 8.3–8.5. I was one of the contributors to ZF1 Mail, so it’s been a bit of a project close to my heart.

Contenir\Mail does both sides of the job in pure PHP, with no dependency on `ext-imap`:

- **Send:** SMTP (STARTTLS required by default), sendmail, file and in-memory transports, failover between transports, and DKIM signing
- **Read:** IMAP4rev2 and POP3 clients, Mbox and Maildir storage, MIME parsing, and TNEF (`winmail.dat`)
- **Authenticate:** SCRAM-SHA-256 and OAuth 2.0 (XOAUTH2) for Gmail and Microsoft 365

I’ve tried as best as I can within my limited resources to make it as hardened as possible but I do need independent verification:

- **Security:** [the security doc](https://github.com/contenir/contenir-mail/blob/main/docs/book/security.md) maps each protection to the regression test that covers it, and to the published CVEs in PHP mail libraries it guards against. There hasn’t been an independent audit yet, and it says so.
- **Standards:** [the standards doc](https://github.com/contenir/contenir-mail/blob/main/docs/book/standards.md) covers 97 RFC requirements. 84 conform, 3 are partial, 2 deviate by design, and 8 optional extensions aren’t implemented.
- **Testing:** CI runs on PHP 8.3, 8.4 and 8.5 with 100% covered-code mutation testing, plus integration tests against real Dovecot, Postfix, Mailpit and GreenMail servers.

It’s young, and I’d rather hear about the rough edges now. I’m especially interested in reports of interoperability with real servers, API design and migration experiences.

Thankyou!

Soon as I get a chance, I’ll write an adapter for it for webware-mailer and pass a long anything I come across.
